12.gif (44 bytes) WHASHTON is a small village set on the northern entrance to Swaledale. From the SMITHY there are fine views of the beginning of Teesdale to the north, and Swaledale to the south. The immediate view is of Holmedale. In the distance the outline of the North Yorkshire Moors is in sight. The SMITHY is 4 miles from Richmond on the Richmond to Ravensworth Road, about 2 miles south of the Ravensworth turn-off, off the A66. For images of Whashton click this link

Alas the VILLAGE SHOP is no more. Richmond (4 miles] has 4 supermarkets and many other shops. For a wider choice of shops the nearest large town is Darlington [15 miles], but there are pleasant market towns of Barnard Castle [9 miles] and Northallerton [15 miles] as alternatives.

PUBS There are many, most also do very acceptable meals. The nearest is in WHASHTON - The Hack and Spade about 1/4 mile, then KIRBY HILL - The Shoulder of Mutton about 1/2 mile, then RAVENSWORTH - The Bay Horse about 1 mile, then GAYLES - The Bay Horse (again) about 2 miles. There are 4 pubs on the A66, and also pubs in the villages of Barningham, Dalton, Hutton Magna, Gilling West (2) and Richmond (many).

The best quality food (priced accordingly) is at Carthorpe, Whashton and Dalton. Carthorpe is about a 30 minute drive but it is well worth it.

DOCTORS, DENTISTS, VETS, POLICE, and similar services. These can be found in Richmond. An information folder is kept in the SMITHY.
